Flying: Taking a suitcase sometimes more expensive than ticket

Most airlines charge additional fees for checking in luggage on European flights. And sometimes these additional fees are more expensive than the ticket itself, according to booking website Tix.nl based on a comparison of 12 airlines. EasyJet is most expensive with a rate that depends on the route. This rate can run up to 51 euros per suitcase. One way air tickets can be found for slightly more than half that price, according to Tix.nl. The charges for too-heavy bags also vary considerably between airlines. Some airlines charge a flat fee of a few tenners, but others charge by kilo. EasyJet charges 14 euros for each kilogram your bag is above 3 kilos. That means that a bag that is 4 kilograms too heavy will cost you an additional 84 euros. Tuifly, for comparison, charges 15 euros for a bag 4 kilos overweight. Airberlin and Lufthansa includes one piece of luggage in their ticket price.
