Nine years in prison demanded in Breda man's stabbing, beating, shooting
The Public Prosecutor demanded 9 years in prison, minus time spent in remand, against Pearl S. in court on Monday. S. is suspected of killing Rudi Schouten in Breda last year. According to the prosecutor, there is no evidence of premeditation in the killing, so S. is facing charges of manslaughter, according to BN De Stem tweeting live from within the courtroom.
Rudi Schouten was killed in broad daylight on Cypresstraat in Breda on April 3rd last year. According to the prosecutor, S. fired at least 10 shots at Schouten after an altercation. S. himself was injured in the incident and taken to the Amphia hospital with his friends.
Pearl S. claims that Schouten attacked him with a knife and that he fired in self defense. "I shot because he picked up the knife, I was in a panic!" he said in court.
But the prosecutor believes S. can not claim self-defense, even if he only fired after Schouten and his brother attacked him with an ax and machete, because S. knew that there would be confrontation. The prosecutor also stated that S. fired two rounds of shots at Schouten, the second only after Schouten was lying defenseless on the ground with no weapon in hand.
The motive for this shooting is still very unclear, according to the newspaper. It seems that Schouten was upset because his ex-girlfriend was abused by one or more members of motorcycle club Satudarah. During the early hours of April 3rd, under the influence of alcohol and cocaine, an angry Schouten went to his ex's sister and slashed her car's tires because her husband is a Satudarah member.
The sister called her husband, who was in Spain at the time, and told him what happened. The husband called his friend, Pearl S., and asked that he go pick up his wife. S. did so and took the woman to her parents house.
While S. was with the sister, Rudi Shcouten called. S. and Schouten agreed to meet and talk about the matter.
According to S., the meeting immediately turned into a fight. "I shook his hand and the he suddenly swung at me. He wanted to play", S. said. He managed to dodge the blow, but then suddenly saw someone coming at him with an ax while Schouten drew a knife. S. opened fire.
Rudi Schouten's brother Danny as well as other witnesses state that several people were involved with the fight. But S. maintains it was only him and the two Schouten brothers.
