Man arrested for fire that killed elderly couple
A 47-year-old man was arrested in Spijkenisse on Wednesday in connection with several cases of arson, including one that killed an elderly couple in Hellevoetsluis last month, the police announced on Thursday.
The fatal fire in Hellevoetsluis happened on May 20th. The couple, both 84-years-old, was trapped in their home on Gruttostraat as it burned around them. The cause of this fire is still unclear, a team of 20 investigators is on the case.
The team, led by the Public Prosecutor, is also investigating a number of other cases of arson and attempted arson in which the damage was limited. They believe all these fires may be connected.
The investigation into these fires led them to the man in Spijkenesse. He is in custody for further investigations. More arrests may follow.
