Cheetah cub in formaldehyde offered on marketplace website

A 50-years-old woman from Rosendaal got a visit from the police after publishing a strange sales advertisement on Marktplaats, a well-known classifieds site, in November. The woman tried to sell a cheetah cub in formaldehyde, the Roosendaal police announced.

The Netherlands' Authority for food security NVWA investigated and made the lugubrious discovery that what she was trying to sell was indeed a cheetah cub in formaldehyde.

The woman was taken to the police station make a statement. She told the police she bought the animal 12 years ago from a Dutch private citizen.

The police filed an official report against the woman and gave her a fine for the violation of the law on flora and fauna. She was forced to give up the cub.

The cheetah has been moved to the Naturalis Biodiversity Center of Leiden.
