Happy leap day! 11,000 celebrate their birthday today

Nearly 11 thousand people in the Netherlands are celebrating their birthday today, on leap year. For 473 four-year-old children, this is the first time they are celebrating their birthday on their actual birthday, Statistics Netherlands reports. A similar number of eight year olds are opening presents today. A total of 10.7 thousand people currently alive in the Netherlands were born on February 29th. Four of them are turning 100 years old today. Leap day is also a popular wedding day in the Netherlands, though the month of February is generally not a popular wedding month. On leap day 2.5 times as many couples get married than on an average February week day.
