Artis Zoo captures baby giraffe birth on video

Artis Zoo has welcomed its first baby giraffe for this year. The female giraffe was born around 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday and the zoo managed to capture the birth on video. According to the zoo, the baby giraffe managed to gain her footing after only about an hour and five attempts. Giraffes start walking soon after birth, so that they can run with the herd in case of danger. The baby is doing well and drinking from her mother. The Artis Zoo giraffe herd now consists of eight giraffes, six females and two males. They are so-called net giraffes, identified by their net-looking patterns, consisting of large, angular spots separated by thin white lines. The baby giraffe will be let outside to explore the Savannah for the first time on Friday at 2:00 p.m.
