Justice Min.: €1.5m to secure Jewish sites in Netherlands

From last year the Cabinet has spent 1.5 million euros extra on the security of Jewish institutions. Minister Ard van der Steur of Security and Justice does not know whether more will be spent on this, but it is a possibility. The Minister said this during the question hour in the Tweede Kamer, lower house of parliament, NOS reports. "Anyone who has followed the news can conclude that the Jewish community is under pressure and has to deal with growing Antisemitism. The security deserves our attention", he said. Van der Steur will meet with Amsterdam Mayor Eberhard van der Land and several Jewish institutions, such as schools and synagogues, on Wednesday to discuss security at Jewish institutions. Amsterdam recently set up a subsidy scheme o help religious institutions pay for extra security. The Minister also said that the police have already arrested several suspected persons and searched several vehicles. He is not worried about the officers' training. "I know and assume that the police and the Koninklijke Marechaussee (military police, ed) are trained to act when there is a threat."
