Father drowns recovering daughter's sailboat

A 57 year old father from Odoornerveen drowned on Sunday at the Grote Rietplas in Emmen after the sailboat carrying his daughters capsized. According to Gert Jan Stuivenberg of the safety office Veiligheidsregio Drenthe, the man was trying to get the capsized sailboat back to the shore when he drowned, RTV Drenthe reports. "He went into the water in an effort to get the boat to the side. He saw that his daughters were safe. They were still in the water, but not in distress." Stuivenberg said on Radio Drenthe on Monday morning. Exactly how the man drowned is still unclear. According to Stuivenberg, the hospital's examination of the man's body should provide answers on that question. The man's daughters were brought to the shore by kite surfers. Stuivenberg stated that they were taken to the hospital for examination, but their lives are not in danger.
