Arson suspected in three overnight fires
The police are investigating three fires that broke out in a short period time in Hoogeveen in the early hours of Monday morning. The police are seriously considering arson.
The first fire broke out at around 2:30 a.m. at the fence of a senior's apartment building on Alteveerstraat. Another fire was discovered in the backyard of a home on the same street an hour later. And in between the police received a report of another fire in a municipality depot on Bentincksdijk.
The residents of the senior's apartment and the home on Alteveerstraat had to be evacuated as a precaution. The fire department was able to extinguish all three fires quickly and the residents were allowed to return to their homes.
According to RTL Nieuws, Hoogeveen last year also had to deal with a series of car fires. The police assumed that an arsonist was active. The last car fire was in February this year. With this latest series of fires, residents fear that the pyromaniac is back.
The police are seriously considering arson, but that is not the final conclusion. The police are investigating to determine whether the fires were set deliberately. And if this is the case, there will be an investigation to determine whether they are connected to the previous car fires. The police have called on the local population for tips through Burgernet.
