Tiny village Giethoorn joins Amsterdam on new Monopoly world edition

The small Overijssel town of Giethoorn will be joining Amsterdam on the board of the new Monopoly world edition, which will be released to celebrate the board-game's 80th anniversary. The game is expected to come out in September. A total of 4 million people from 182 countries voted for their favorite town or city from a list of 80 cities selected by game company Hasbro. In the last week of voting two wildcards came into play, towns and cities not selected by the company had a chance to present themselves for the final two spots on the board game. Giethoorn managed to snag one of these spots. Lennard de Boer, one of the driving forces behind the promotional site Giethoorn.com, is ecstatic that their little town made onto the board. He did not hesitate to nominate Giethoorn when he read that Monopoly lovers around the world could nominate their favorite city for the wildcard. De Boer told RTL that everything got going when Luuk Ikink brought attention to their attempt to get on the Monopoly board on RLT Late Night. "After that positive reactions rained in" De Boer said. He thinks that that is the typical way of Goethoorn. "First wait and see how it falls. And then the rest happens almost automatically." Giethoorn will get one of the brown spaces on the Monopoly board, Amsterdam was assigned a pink space, Het Parool reports.
