Coldest Dutch August in 30 years
While the low temperatures in the Netherlands feels like it is unusually cold for this time of year, it hasn't reached a record low yet, says Weerplaza.nl.Temperatures in De Bilt only reached 16.7 degrees on Sunday and is expected to be 16 degrees today. Since 1980 there has only been one colder day between August 11th and August 20th. On August 11, 2006 the maximum temperature in De Bilt was measured at 15.8 degrees, which is still warmer than in 1924 when the August 19th high temperature was a dismal 14 degrees, AD.nl reports.
Thanks to the cold snap, August will be the first month that comes in below the average expected temperature in more than a year. This August will only reach an expected average temperature of 16.7 degrees. The usual average temperature for August is 17.5 degrees. Although Weerplaza.nl reports that August failed to reach an average of 17.5 degrees seven times since the year 2000.
According to Weerplaza.nl the low temperatures are the result of the airflow around the Arctic Circle. This airflow is warmed by the relatively warmer seawater, but not enough to reach temperatures of 22 or 23 degrees that is normal for this time of year.
Despite the cold month of August it looks like the last few days of summer will be warmer. Temperatures are expected to rise to between 20 and 24 degrees after the weekend.
