Parool staffer wins award for horse meat investigation
Parool staffer Hiske Versprille won the prestigious 'Tegel' reporter award in the category 'Investigation.' Versprille wrote a series of articles, exposing the famous steakhouse, Piet de Leeuw, for selling horse meat as beef steak. The jury commends the reporter for the way she presents urban news with a national flair.
The lighthearted tone in which she presents her articles nicely contrasts with her vigilance. In the end the owner of the steakhouse owned up to his practices without being crucified, and horse meat is now very popular in Amsterdam; restaurants even advertise it. Versprille is modest about her trophies and was surprised she won the award, since she thought her news only small compared to the articles the other two candidates wrote.
