Sven Kramer drops coach
Sven Kramer, Olympic gold medal winner on the 5,000 m in Sochi, stops training with his coach, Gerard Kemkers, effective immediately. "If I want something new, now is the time to do it," said Kramer during a press conference Friday afternoon in Heerenveen.
Immediately after the press conference Kramer explained his decision on Twitter, voicing appreciation and gratitude for his coach of nine years. The 27-year-old Frisian skater still has ambitions for the Pyongyang games in 2018, but wants to see what a new coach can contribute to his career.
Kemkers coached Kramer to many a victory, but is also known as the coach who sent his pupil into the wrong lane during the 10km race in the 2010 winter Olympics in Vancouver, costing him the gold medal.
