Car chase in Maastricht turns into bike chase

A 36-year old male from Maastricht became a danger to the public on saturday night when he involved the police in a wild car chase through the center of his town. The man was driving under the influence and with high speed through the city in an attempt to dodge the Royal Military Police, who eventually caught up with him. The Military Police officers decided to follow the motorist when they noticed him drive by, zig-zagging and with changing speed.

The man ignored the police when they signaled him to stop, and increased his speed. He was causing a danger to other motorists and bystanders, the police said Sunday morning. The man also crashed his car into the Military Police vehicle. At one point, when the man could no longer drive in town, he abandoned his car and ran on foot. One of the pursuing policemen borrowed a bicycle from a woman bystander, and continued the chase. After a long hunt, the suspect was tackled. He has been apprehended for driving under the influence, causing a danger on the roads and attempted homicide.
