Plundering funeral treasurer skipped town
A local politician from Denekamp in Overijssel has vanished after plundering the bank account of the town’s funeral association.
Funeral association Helpt Elkander has filed reports against Van G. for fraud and embezzlement, reports Tubantia, the daily newspaper in Twente. As the association's treasurer, the 53-year-old man transferred all money on the current bank account –some €21,000- to his private account on January 2, and then left town; he has not been seen since Friday.
Helpt Elkander said on its website that it has hired an accountant to bring clarity in its financial management. The theft reportedly leaves the association in dire straits.
Lokaal Dinkelland, the local political party, has since removed Van G. from its list of candidates for the next municipal elections. Van G. served as counselor for the party in Denekamp.
