New Year: 8,400 incidents, 800 arrests

Minister of Security and Justice Ivo Opstelten seems not happy with increased incidents during this year’s New Year celebrations compared to last year. The minister said in a statement that 8,400 incidents happened during New Year celebrations and 800 people were arrested, including 100 arrests in the village of Veen on Monday. During the celebrations, Opstelten said, 10,000 police officers were on duty. New Year's Eve / Wikipedia According to Opstelten, public attacks on police, ambulance staff and firemen are totally unacceptable and wrong. The minister, however, is satisfied that the number of serious incidents was down this year. Growing number of attacks on police is mainly due to zero tolerance policy.
