40 car accidents caused by ice this morning
The police received dozens of reports of accidents Monday morning, between 06:30 and 09:00, due to iced over roads. The combination of moist weather and low temperatures on the ground caused icy patches all over the country.The sudden onset of icy patches surprised many motorists. Cars and trucks slipped off the road and many bikers went fell as well.

In north Netherlands at least 40 accidents occurred, with an unknown number of injured and lots of fender benders. On the A4 near Rijswijk the exits Rijswijk-Centrum and Plaspoelpolder were closed as a precautionary measure. A limited speed measure was in effect on the A9 toward Alkmaar, on the connecting road toward the A5 on, the Raasdorp junction. The N201 Hoofddorp Uithoorn was closed in both directions between the road to Aalsmeer and the N231 to Amstelveen/Aalsmeer due to ice. Rijkswaterstaat sprayed in large parts of the country last night to reduce the ice buildup. Some places are expected to ice over again. In some cases the drivers were taken to a hospital by ambulance for a check-up. So far one motorist from Eastermar was severely wounded. A 22-year-old driver slipped off the road on the Sumarderwei in Eastermar and was severely wounded. She was taken by ambulance to the UMCG in Groningen.
