Mild Earthquake in Appingedam

A small earthquake occurred in Appingedam, 20 kilometers northeast of Groningen, Nieuws.nl reports quoting a spokesman for the KNMI. The quake had a magnitude of 2.0 on the Richter scale and occurred just before 1:00 am. Citing emails between the Dutch Petroleum Company (NAM), the State Supervision of Mines (SODM), and the Ministry of Economic Affairs, broadcaster NOS reported these three organizations are somewhat certain of heavier earthquakes in the future depending on the amount of gas removed from the Groningen field.
