Canal Route Planner

Beginning the end of May, people will be able to avoid the crowds in the canals of Amsterdam. With new information added to the existing mobile phone application ‘Vaarwater’, a route planner for the canals, people will be able to see where it is busy. The municipality of Amsterdam, the water company of the capital (Waternet) and the research organization TNO developed the route planner for the famous canals. They added sensors at 17 places to measure congestion. NOS.nl reports that with approximately 18 thousands boats, the canals are getting very busy. The developers also want to use the information for events that involve boats in the canals.
