The fire department in Zuid-Holland had their hands full with reports of flooded houses and cellars, caused by heavy rains during the early hours of Wednesday morning, ANP reports.

Alblasserwaard, with villages such as Alblasserdam and Molenaarsgraaf, in particular had many problems, local safety office Veiligheidsregio Zuid-Holland-Zuid said to ANP. The control room in nearby Hoeksche Waard also received many calls.

One of three suspects arrested for the assassination of Reduan Bakali, the brother of a key witness in the investigations into gang related assassinations in Amsterdam and Utrecht, is the director of a tropical plant nursery in the Zuid-Holland village of De Lier, newspaper AD reports.

The first peewit egg of the year was found in Giesselanden in Zuid-Holland on Wednesday. The discovery of the first peewit egg traditionally signals the coming of spring and is deeply rooted in Dutch history. 

Andre Hornstra, a volunteer at Nature and Birdwatch Alblasserwaard, found the egg on a pasture in the Botersloot polder and reported it to LandschappenNL at 6:14 p.m. The egg was checked later in the evening, and it was determined to be a fresh egg.

Divers searching the Böttgerwater in the Ypenburg district of Den Haag found the body of Orlando Boldewijn on Monday, police said. Investigators were working the area in an effort to find the 17-year-old Rotterdam boy who did not return after a February 17 meeting with an acquaintance made through dating app Grindr.

Zijlstra announced the move Tuesday evening at the beginning of a scheduled debate on the minister's prior conduct.

An autopsy was scheduled to determine what killed a 39-year-old Den Haag man who appeared to be repeatedly punched when police tried to apprehend him, prosecutors said Friday evening. Paul Selier, a father of two children living in The Hague, was identified in media reports as the victim.

The prospect of slippery roads prompted the Dutch national weather service, KNMI, to issue another Code Yellow weather warning. The caution is in effect across the Netherlands from 4 p.m. on Tuesday through noon on Wednesday.

Snow is also possible in the center of the country, and continuing to the east and south. The eastern provinces have the highest likelihood for icy roadways overnight, but with winter showers expected everywhere in the Netherlands drivers were told to be particularly careful.

In a significant part of the Netherlands temperatures dropped below zero early Monday morning. Temperatures dipped down to -3 degrees Celsius in the north, -1 in the center and 2 degrees in the south, together with a moderate northeastern wind that was relatively strong at the seaside. Meteorologists from weather website Buienradar predicted the overnight wind chill would make it feel as if it were 10 degrees below zero.

An investigation into an alpaca found wandering the streets of Haarlem late Tuesday night is ongoing, but authorities have asked the public to stop calling them with requests to take the animal off their hands and provide it foster care. After the Haarlem police's tweet asking for tips or information regarding the alpaca, which has since been named "Teddy," police said they received so many calls from citizens wanting to adopt the animal they were forced to post another message asking the public to stop

The Wednesday storm that blew across the Netherlands with wind speeds peaking at 141 kilometers per hour caused roughly 10 million euros in damage to homes and vehicles, the insurance association Verbond van Verzekeraars (VvV) announced on Thursday. A full year of storms cause physical damage of roughly 50 million euros, a spokesperson told broadcaster NOS.

A man who was shot by security troops at Schiphol Airport on Friday afternoon after allegedly threatening people with a knife was identified as a 29-year-old man from Den Haag. The shooting happened in the Schiphol Plaza, the airport's primary entryway which also provides access to the train station below.

Three shots can be heard in amateur video recorded in the plaza.

A forensic investigation team dug up a body in a cemetery in Heerjansdam, near Barendrecht, on Thursday. This was done by order of the Public Prosecutor in an investigation into a nursing home worker suspected of murdering elderly patients by intentionally giving them an overdose of insulin, AD reports.

An email sent by a broker informing a Dutch-Moroccan couple that a home in Ter Aar they were interested in renting can only be rented by people of Dutch origin, again sparked a racism debate in the Netherlands. 

The couple went to look at the home in the Zuid-Holland town and decided they were interested, so they sent in all the documents the broker asked for. "The owner has chosen to only rent to people of Dutch descent. I am sorry to have to report this to you", read the email they received in response. One of the applicants posted a screenshot of the email on Facebook.

Water locks and pumping stations in the Netherlands are in danger of being hacked due to inadequate computer hardware and software, according to an investigation published by the Telegraaf. Security software is updated just about every five years, a sign of poor maintenance, and the computer systems that control the water operations date back as far as the mid-1980s, the newspaper said.

A 21-year-old nursing home worker accused of intentionally injecting elderly patients with overdoses of insulin is now suspected in two other fatal cases, the public prosecutor announced on Thursday. Rahiied A. was already suspected of causing the death of one person, and having possible involvement in the deaths of four others.

There are at least six known cases where a victim survived.

Sometime between Friday night and Saturday morning, someone vandalized a war memorial on Polderstraat in the Zuid-Holland town of Alblasserdam. One of the four scales that form part of the monument was found shattered on Saturday morning. Mayor Jaap Paans of Alblasserdam gave the perpetrators an ultimatum - turn yourself in by noon on Monday, or charges will be pressed. The perpetrator turned himself in on Monday, RTV Rijnmond reports.

Buses filled with Zwarte Piet protestors were stopped by a group of about 35 white people stationed on the A7 highway outside Heerenveen, Friesland on Saturday. The protesters were on their way to the official Sinterklaas arrival in Dokkum about 50 kilometers away, where they had approval from city officials to march against the character.

The family of an Aruban man who died during an arrest while he was on vacation in the Netherlands wants the European Court of Justice to determine if the investigation into the arrest was handled properly. The family of Mitch Henriquez also want expert testimony from a lip reader to help interpret new camera footage from the day of the arrest they say shows one officer picking up Henriquez's lifeless body, when another pushes the body back to the ground. They also say the video shows that Henriquez's face was purple from a lack of oxygen.

A 75-year-old man from Tilburg was arrested on Friday in Nepal on suspicion of criminal acts connected to pedophilia. Police in the Netherlands arrested a 46-year-old man at his house in Zuid-Holland in connection with the case, the public prosecutor said in a statement.

Another man in Amsterdam was believed to be in custody, children's rights organization Terres des Hommes told Het Parool. Prosecutors would only confirm that the Zuid-Holland home and other properties in the south of the Netherlands were searched by investigators.
