The Dutch government no longer wants to take in sick or injured seals, unless they were injured by human action, Minister Carola Schouten of Agriculture, Nature and Food Quality wrote to parliament. She is thereby adopting the advice of a committee that researched seal shelter in the Netherlands. The committee concluded that a 'hands off' approach should apply to sick or stranded seals, and that their care must be more professional, ANP reprots.
Seal center Pieterburen rescued a snow white baby seal pup from a road in Den Helder on Christmas Day, the center announced on Facebook.
According to Pieterburen, the seal was separated from its mother. Curious bystanders scared the pup onto the road. In consultation with the local volunteer, it was decided that Pieterburen would take the pup in.
Dirk Bruin of the Noordwester information center became a hero in the eyes of a primary school class when he jumped off a boat, into the ocean and rescued a seal trapped in a large fishing net during a field trip. The teacher of the class caught the heroic act on video.
A Ringed Seal was discovered swimming in the Oudegracht canal in Utrecht on Thursday night. The lost seal was rescued out of the canal by the police and handed over to seal sanctuary A Seal in Stellendam. According to both the police and the sanctuary, the seal is doing very well.
An Albert Heijn advertising campaign promoting dirt cheap "crystal" glassware violated Dutch rules because the glasses do not contain lead, and are thus not authentically "crystal," advertising watchdog Reclame Code Commissie (RCC) ruled Tuesday. Several Albert Heijn (AH) customers complained about the grocery chain's advertisement campaign for fake crystal glasses last December.
The seal that recently swam in the canals of Groningen travelled further inland to the province of Drenthe. People saw the animal in the small stream de Hunze, close to Annen, about 40 kilometers from the sea.
