After four months of negotiations the Netherlands and France have reached an agreement on their 160 million euro combined purchase of two Rembrandt portraits. The portraits, set for a lengthy restoration, will first undergo a brief touchup. They will then go on display in Paris for three months before arriving in Amsterdam, the ANP newswire reported on Monday.

France has committed 80 million euros in a bid to buy one of the two Rembrandt paintings that were conditionally sold to the Rijksmuseum for a combined 160 million. The museum orchestrated the purchase with 80 million euros from the Dutch government with the goal of bringing the marriage portraits of Maerten Soolmans and Oopjen Coppit back to the Netherlands.

The two Rembrandt paintings which the Rijksmuseum and the Dutch Government committed to buying for 160 million euros will first make an exhibition tour of all twelve provincial capitals around the Netherlands before reaching their new home at Amsterdam's Rijksmuseum. The Bonnefanten Museum in Maastricht won the honour as the first museum to receive the paintings, Director Stijn Huijts confirmed with Telegraaf.nl.
