Trade unions and employers in secondary education have reached a new collective bargaining agreement. Secondary education workers' wages will increase by 3.5 percent, and salaries and salary scales will increase 2.75 percent retroactively from March 1, unions CNV Education and AOb announced, NOS reports

End of year bonuses will also increase by 0.6 percent. And full time workers in secondary education will receive a once-off bonus of 750 euros. This collective bargaining agreement runs until January 1st, 2021.

Half of the 275 thousand temporary workers in the Netherlands currently have no or almost no work due to the ongoing health crisis, according to a study done by Maurice de Hond on behalf of trade union CNV. Another 40 percent of the over 500 respondents said they are worried that they will soon have no work.

"Very shocking figures," CNV chairman Piet Fortuin said to RTL Nieuws. "The government supports employers with billions of euros to keep temporary workers in service. But despite all that support, employers have sent away their temporary workers en masse. Outrageous."

KLM is looking into ways to expand measuring the temperature of travelers flying with the Dutch airline during the coronavirus crisis. These health checks are currently performed on flights to Canada, Seoul, and Singapore at the request of these locations, a spokesperson for the company said to NU.nl. CNV is calling on employers to do more to protect their workers against Covid-19.

Now that the government has implemented yet stricter measures around curbing the spread of the coronavirus, secondary schools and education unions call for school exams and central exams to be scrapped. "All gatherings are forbidden, so it is unthinkable that students will take school exams this week," AOb chairman Eugenie Stolk said  to RTL Nieuws.

After a year of difficult negotiations, a collective bargaining agreement was reached for primary education. The trade unions and employers agreed on a 4.5 percent wage increase for all teaching staff. They will also receive a once-off payment of 33 percent of their monthly wage and a once-off amount of 875 euros, education union AOb announced.

Nine out of ten hospitals in the Netherlands will be taking part in a strike for a better collective labor agreement on November 20th. A total of 82 hospitals and rehabilitation centers responded to the trade unions' call to strike. Employees of university hospitals will not participate because they fall under a different collective agreement, NU.nl reports.

On Wednesday, November 20th, hospital staff across the Netherlands will do the hospital variant of a strike - refuse to perform any of their non-emergency duties. This is the first national strike by hospital workers ever in the Netherlands, unions FNV, FBZ, NU'91 and CNV said, NOS reports.

Just two years after opening its first Dutch store in Amsterdam, Hudson's Bay announced that it is leaving the Netherlands. The Canadian department store chain will close its 15 Dutch branches, where around 1,400 people work, by the end ot this year, NOS reports.

Employees of various sectors are striking for better pensions and to freeze the retirement age at 66 throughout the Netherlands on Monday. The first and most disrupting strike was in public transit between 6:00 a.m. and 7:06 a.m. During that time no NS trains were running, as well as no trams, subways and buses in Amsterdam, The Hague and Rotterdam.

National railway NS fears that an early morning strike by its employees on Monday will cause “major hindrance” to train traffic all day. The timetable will be disrupted all day long if no trains run before 7:06 a.m., according to the rail company.

Monday will be a chaotic day for people who commute to work by public transport. NS announced that it will join an early morning strike held by city- and regional public transit companies, AD reports.

The public transit companies are protesting for freezing the retirement age at 66. For that reason they will strike from 6:00 a.m. for 66 minutes, trade union CNV Vakmensen said. The strike will likely also cause delays after its end.

Public transit workers in Amsterdam will strike for part of Monday, March 18th, as part of a national action day for better pensions, trade unions CNV, VCP and FNV announced. Amsterdam public transit company GVB confirmed the strike to Het Parool.

General education union AOb and trade union FNV Onderwijs en Onderzoek are planning a national strike in primary, secondary and higher education on March 15th. Various action groups, including PO in Actie and WO in Actie, support the strike, the Volkskrant reports.

The Blokker family is putting the Blokker chain up for sale, president-commissioner Michiel Witteveen confirmed in an interview with Financieele Dagblad. "Blokker has been managed for 112 years from a family perspective and sometimes it is better to approach it from a different perspective. Fortunately the family sees that too", he said to the newspaper.

The family is currently looking for a buyer. According to FD, the debt the Blokker chain has at its sale will be waived. This amounts to at least 150 million euros, the newspaper writes.

A planned strike by security workers at Schiphol airport next week, has been canceled, trade union De Unie reports. Last night the unions and security companies reached a principle collective bargaining agreement for the 4 thousand security workers at the Amsterdam airport, the union said, AD reports.
