Low water levels halt key ferries on Waal and IJssel rivers
Low water levels have forced several ferries to stop operating on the Waal and IJssel rivers, Hart van Nederland reports. The disruptions have cut off key crossings for pedestrians and cyclists. The low water levels have also raised uncertainty about a special ferry service for the Vierdaagse walking event, scheduled for July 21 to July 24 in Nijmegen.
Voetveer Uiterwaard halted two Waal routes on Monday. One that connects Druten and Dodewaard and the other that links Beuningen and Slijk-Ewijk.
Kievits Veerdiensten suspended its cyclist and pedestrian ferry between Millingerwaard and Doornenburg in Gelderland until further notice. Its nearby route between Millingen aan de Rijn and Pannerden continues to operate.
The ferry between Gorssel and Wilp on the IJssel stopped operating on Wednesday. Its operator said docking and boarding for cyclists and pedestrians were already difficult Tuesday. No restart date has been announced.
The director of the Vierdaagse walking event told De Gelderlander it remains uncertain whether the special Waal ferry for the event will run.
