Police confirm persistent stink at Amsterdam prison

Police have confirmed that reports of severe odors in the detention cells at the Elandsgracht police station in Amsterdam’s Centrum district are accurate, saying some smells remain despite daily cleaning. The facility houses about 45 cells and is used for detainees from the Centrum, Noord, and West police districts, AT5 reports.

The issue came to light after a Centrum police team answered questions from followers last week. One person asked whether reports that the cells “smell terribly” were true.

“Yes, that is correct,” an officer replied. “The facility is cleaned every day, but unfortunately some strong odors remain. Some detained suspects live on the streets and have not showered for weeks, sometimes months.” The officer added that the smell is not present everywhere in the detention complex.

The Elandsgracht detention facility is centrally located and has long been used to receive detainees from several parts of Amsterdam. The team responsible for detainees previously said the location is especially convenient on weekends because officers can bring arrested people there easily.

Amsterdam has several detention facilities. Another major complex is located on Flierbosdreef in Zuidoost and has about 70 cells.
