Roadworks, rail repairs to give Amsterdammers headaches this weekend
Motorists in and around Amsterdam are being advised to prepare for significant disruption this weekend because of maintenance works on sections of the A10 ring road and the A4. “Expect 30 to 60 minutes of extra travel time,” the municipality of Amsterdam warns. Train services to and from Amsterdam Central Station will also be heavily disrupted next weekend due to construction work, NS has announced. The disruption will follow days of cancellations due to the public transport strike.
Major road closures are planned in and around Amsterdam from Friday at 10 p.m. until Monday at 5 a.m. The A4 between Schiphol and Amstelveen, along with the A10 Zuid up to exit S108, will be shut due to ongoing work on the Zuidasdok project and the new southern Schinkel Bridge. Near Amsterdam Zuid station, two lanes will be closed, and the link from the A10 West to the A10 Zuid will also be unavailable.
Diversion routes have been set up for affected traffic. Drivers on the A10 West heading towards the Zuidas are being redirected via the A5, A9, and A2, while traffic from Schiphol towards Amsterdam on the A4 will be rerouted through the A9 and A2. Authorities are advising motorists to check their navigation systems before travelling.
Train services to and from Amsterdam Central Station will also be heavily disrupted next weekend, NS has announced. No trains will run during the nights between Saturday and Sunday and Sunday and Monday, while daytime services on several routes will also be reduced. The disruption is caused by infrastructure works carried out by ProRail, including the installation of new cabling.
During the night closures, NS will provide replacement bus services for travellers. One of the key routes connects Amsterdam Central Station and Schiphol, where a night train normally operates. That train will instead run from Schiphol to Utrecht Central via Amsterdam Bijlmer ArenA over the weekend.
NS is warning passengers to expect longer journey times and to consult the travel planner before travelling. ProRail will station extra staff to help manage passenger flows, as ongoing works have reduced capacity at Amsterdam Central Station, including on platforms and in the underground concourses.
