KNMI issues code yellow for strong wind gusts across Noord-Holland, northern Netherlands
The Royal Netherlands Meteorological Institute (KNMI) issued a code yellow warning for Noord-Holland, Friesland, the Waddeneilanden, and the IJsselmeer region due to strong wind gusts expected overnight, while new KNMI data released earlier shows April remains the only month in the Netherlands that has never recorded a code orange or code red weather warning.
The wind warning applies to gusts of up to 80 kilometers per hour inland and up to 90 kilometers per hour along the coast. The wind is coming from the southwest and is expected to create hazardous conditions on exposed roads and bridges.
KNMI warned that the conditions could be particularly dangerous for drivers of vehicles such as trucks, vans, and cars with trailers, which may struggle to maintain stability in the strong gusts. The code yellow alert remains in effect until early Sunday morning, with conditions expected to ease gradually and winds forecast to subside around 7 a.m. across the affected areas.
The warning comes against the backdrop of KNMI's analysis of more than 15 years of weather alert data, which shows that while severe weather occurs in all seasons, April is the only month without any recorded code orange or code red warnings.
