Online voting tools launch ahead of march municipal elections

Voters preparing for the 2026 municipal elections can now access online tools to compare their views with local and national party positions. The municipal elections are set for Wednesday, March 18, and residents often eligible to vote in the local elections regardless of their nationality.

The national StemWijzer is scheduled to go live February 18, while some municipalities already offer Kieskompas, an independent online voting guide that allows users to see how their opinions align with parties in their area. Both tools let users answer statements on key political issues and see which parties’ positions match their own.

StemWijzer provides a nationwide platform, while Kieskompas is available in select municipalities, such as Oegstgeest, and may vary by location. Both aim to give voters a clear overview of party stances and help them make informed decisions before casting their ballots.

Local guides are also becoming available. In Amstelveen, the MijnStem tool is live at mijnstem.nl/amstelveen. Developed with all eleven local political parties, it features 24 statements covering housing, healthcare, education, Schiphol Airport, asylum reception, and climate policy.

Users indicate agreement or disagreement using a slider and receive a summary showing which parties most closely match their positions. Explanations from all parties are included, and the guide is accessible in both Dutch and English.

“With the launch of MijnStem, the municipality hopes that more residents actively and well-informed participate in the municipal elections on March 18,” officials said.
