Code yellow, icy roads persist in northeastern Netherlands as cold front moves in
From Sunday evening, KNMI has declared a code yellow warning in Groningen and Drenthe due to icy conditions, effective until 3 p.m. Monday. Friesland and the Wadden Islands will see a code yellow alert beginning at 4 a.m. Monday through the afternoon.
“On Monday, it will freeze in the northeastern provinces, and combined with some rain, this can cause treacherous ice,” Weeronline reported. The service also noted that rain could briefly turn into wet snow. Temporary wet snow may occur in Overijssel, Flevoland, and northern Noord-Holland, though the risk of ice is lower in these areas.
By evening and overnight Sunday, temperatures in Groningen, Friesland, and Drenthe are forecast to drop below freezing. If rain persists, icy patches may form locally. Southern provinces will see the most rainfall later in the night, with temperatures between 2 and 5 degrees.
Monday will remain cloudy with light rain in the south and southwest. In the northeast, roads could be slippery due to freezing rain. Rain may again turn into wet snow in some areas. In the afternoon, temperatures in the northeast are expected to stay below freezing, 5 degrees in the central provinces, and 7 degrees along the southern border. Winds will be moderate from the east to southeast, and on the Wadden Islands, fairly strong. Monday night into Tuesday, an icy east wind will lower temperatures further.
Tuesday will begin with widespread frost in the central and northern Netherlands. Dry skies with occasional sun are expected, but moderate to strong east winds in the north will make it feel colder.
From the south, cloud cover will increase, followed by precipitation: rain in the south, wet snow in central and northern provinces, possibly transitioning to rain.
Frozen roads may make icy conditions particularly dangerous. Afternoon highs are projected at 4 to 7 degrees in the south, 2 to 3 degrees in the center and west, and below freezing in the north and east.
Wednesday is expected to be milder and mostly dry, with 6 to 9 degrees in central and southern provinces. The north will remain mostly cloudy, with a chance of light rain and temperatures between 1 and 5 degrees. Local highs in sunny Zuid-Limburg may reach 10 degrees.
Later in the week, northeastern provinces may return to wintry conditions, with light frost and near-freezing daytime temperatures. Southern provinces will see 5 to 7 degrees with occasional rain and dry intervals. The north may experience wet snow and possible ice again.
Weeronline predicts that by Tuesday, wind chill in northern regions could make it feel like -10 to -14 degrees due to the persistent east wind.
