PSV hammer Feyenoord 3–0 to tighten grip on Eredivisie title
PSV certified their position as champions-elect on Sunday with a convincing 3-0 victory over their nearest challengers, Feyenoord. Three goals in the first 20 minutes from Armando Obispo, Guus Til, and Ismael Saibari were enough for the three points in a game that was very comfortable for the league leaders.
The gap between the two clubs now stands at 17 points. This will highly likely be insurmountable. This is also the opinion of the PSV supporters who sang “ga staan voor de kampioen” during the game, which means “stand up for the champions” in the second half of the game in the Philips Stadium.
Esmir Bajraktarevic started the game for PSV. The Bosnian was brought in to replace Denis Man, who felt a slight injury after the midweek UEFA Champions League game against Bayern Munich. Jeremiah St. Juste made his return for Feyenoord. The center back finalized a return to the Rotterdammers last week, having already played for the club from 2017 to 2019.
It proved to be a terrible return for the defender as Feyenoord experienced the first 20 minutes of hell. The first goal fell in the 10th minute. A free kick from Joey Veerman was headed into the goal by Armando Obispo after the center back had gotten to the ball before Feyenoord keeper Timon Wellenreuther.
This was followed by the 2-0 three minutes later. Mauro Junior chipped the ball into the box from the left-hand side. Wellenreuther made contact with it, but only enough to put it right on the foot of Guus Til, who tapped the ball into the empty net against his former club.
PSV famously beat Feyenoord 10-0 in 2010, and some Feyenoord fans will have feared a similar day when PSV got their third goal in just the 18th minute. A poor pass from Anis Hadj Moussa was intercepted by Paul Wanner, and the German stayed calm to play a pass across to Saibari for another tap-in.
The goal meant that Saibari became just the second player to score four goals in a single Eredivisie season for PSV against Feyenoord after the Brazilian forward Romario. It also marked the earliest 3-0 deficit in an Eredivisie game in Feyenoord’s history.
Saibari almost got his second goal in the 32nd minute when the Moroccan found space for a shot on the edge of the area, but Wellenreuther’s outstretched arm knocked the ball away.
PSV took their foot off the gas in the second half. The only moments of danger came through free kicks and crosses from Veerman, one of which found Til unmarked at the second post, but the forward got the header completely wrong to the amusement of himself.
Feyenoord also got a man sent off in the closing stages of the game to add insult to injury. Goncalo Borges was given a straight red for what was deemed a dangerous challenge on Couhaib Driouech.
PSV will now focus on the KNVB Cup. The Eindhovenaren face Heerenveen at home on Wednesday evening. Feyenoord, who are already knocked out of the competition, will wait until next Sunday to play again, when they face FC Utrecht in the Eredivisie.
