Jetten I Cabinet could be sworn in on February 23
The D66, VVD, and CDA, the three parties negotiating to form the next Dutch Cabinet, aim to hold the swearing-in ceremony of the new Cabinet on February 23, sources close to the formation process told NOS.
According to the sources, the date fits well into King Willem-Alexander’s schedule. The Dutch King swears in the new Ministers and State Secretaries. It is also on a Monday, allowing the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament, to debate the government statement later in the week, as is traditionally done after a new Cabinet is sworn in.
The date has been penciled in because it gives the parties a very tight timeline. They’re still negotiating finances and how to fund the billions in additional expenditure they want to do. Their deadline for presenting a draft coalition agreement is January 30.
After that, they still have to find and screen the new Cabinet members, and the formateur - the person leading the phase of the Cabinet formation process - has to interview them for suitability. The formateur in the interviewing phase is always the incoming Prime Minister, D66 leader Rob Jetten in this case.
