Winter snow prompts amateur and professional football cancellations across the country

Dutch football association KNVB has canceled all amateur matches scheduled for Saturday, January 10, and Sunday, January 11, due to severe winter weather. The decision follows the earlier cancellation of all professional matches planned on Friday.

In a statement, the football association said, “Besides uncertainty about the playability of the fields, the current forecast indicates that the safety of players, supporters, and staff in and around the stadiums cannot be sufficiently guaranteed due to extreme weather.”

The winter conditions forced the cancellation of Friday’s Eredivisie match between NEC and FC Utrecht, along with five Eerste Divisie games: FC Dordrecht vs. Helmond Sport, FC Emmen vs. SC Cambuur, MVV Maastricht vs. Almere City FC, Vitesse vs. FC Eindhoven, and Willem II vs. ADO Den Haag.

The KNVB said the matches will be rescheduled shortly. The cancellations delay the resumption of Dutch professional football after the winter break by at least one day.

The KNVB said it will make decisions in the coming days regarding other matches in the round. Among the postponed fixtures, top Eredivisie club PSV is scheduled to return to action on Saturday against Excelsior at 8:00 p.m.
