Thousands left without water in Drachten after main pipeline break; Issue now resolved

Thousands of residents in Drachten experienced a water outage after a main pipe on Noorderhogeweg broke, according to Fryslân Veilig. The disruption affected not only Drachten but also nearby villages, where tap water was either unavailable or reduced. Vitens, the water company, announced that the issues were solved at around 11:30 a.m.

Thanks to its own emergency supply, Nij Smellinghe Hospital in Drachten still had water. Essential services such as hospitals, fire departments, and care homes often have emergency provisions, such as water storage or temporary connections, so they can continue to operate.

Omrop Fryslân reports that supermarkets in the Frisian town experienced a rush for bottled water, quickly depleting the shelves. Vitens says the reason for the pipeline rupture is still unknown.

Vitens’ “current outages and maintenance” webpage was also offline, likely because so many people were checking it in relation to the water disruption, the Friesland safety region says. A spokesperson for Vitens says the company is now slowly increasing the water pressure to ensure that taps throughout the area start running again.

Breaks in main pipelines can occur from aging pipes, temperature changes, ground settling, or sudden shifts in pressure. These failures often lead to major water outages, as one pipeline can supply a significant portion of the network.

Fixing a main pipeline can take from a few hours to several days, depending on how accessible the pipe is, the extent of the break, and weather conditions. Water companies often temporarily isolate parts of the network to repair the pipe and carefully bring the system back up to pressure.

This comes a few days after the enterococcus bacteria was detected in the drinking water system in Amersfoort. Vitens has flushed the water network in the city, but lifting the boil-water advisory requires two consecutive clean test results. Since water samples must be cultured for 48 hours to ensure accuracy, the first results are expected no earlier than Friday (today), with the second expected on Saturday. Vitens has committed to sending an update to affected residents via SMS and email on Saturday, December 27.
