Stormy weather eases across Netherlands after morning of heavy rain and wind
Stormy weather that battered the Netherlands early Monday with hail, thunder, and gusts of up to 90 kilometers per hour began to ease by late morning, weeronline said. Rain showers are expected to continue through the afternoon and evening, but conditions will gradually calm as the week progresses.
Some commuters faced hazardous travel conditions during the morning rush hour as heavy rain, hail, and lightning swept across the country. The morning brought widespread rain across the country, with the heaviest downpours in the northern provinces.
In coastal areas, winds reached near-storm strength — between force 6 and 8 on the Beaufort scale — while inland regions faced moderate to strong westerly winds.
By 11 a.m., showers were still moving across much of the country, but both rainfall and wind intensity had started to decrease.
Temperature highs are expected to reach around 11 degrees, several degrees cooler than typical for late October. Weeronline said that the brisk northwesterly wind continues to make it feel colder than the measured temperature.
Forecasters say conditions will further improve Monday night, with skies clearing in many areas before new rain moves in from the west after midnight. Winds along the coast will briefly strengthen again as the next rainband arrives.
Tuesday will bring calmer, drier weather, with scattered coastal showers and more sunshine inland. Temperatures will rise slightly to around 14 degrees.
On Wednesday, during the national election day, the country will see typical autumn weather — cloudy and wet in the northwest, with occasional rain elsewhere — before improving again Thursday, which is expected to be the driest and sunniest day of the week.
