Anti-immigration riots in The Hague caused €89,000 in damage to Binnenhof and D66 office
Last week’s anti-immigration riots in The Hague caused an estimated 89,000 euros in damage to political and government buildings, authorities said.
The Binnenhof complex, including the historic Tweede Kamer building, sustained destruction estimated at 55,000 euros, according to the Ministry of Housing, Spatial Planning and the Environment.
The D66 party office on Lange Houtstraat suffered 34,000 euros in damage. Windows were smashed, one door was dislodged, and another was damaged after protesters hurled paving stones.
“It is not yet clear whether the insurance will cover the damage. Discussions are ongoing,” a party spokesperson said. D66 also plans to seek compensation from those responsible.
The riots began during a demonstration against the Netherlands’ asylum policy on Malieveld. Groups of protesters clashed with police before marching into the city center, vandalizing buildings along the way. Some shouted far-right and antisemitic slogans.
