Dutch universities face criticism for restricting open debate. NOS reports this has raised concerns about academic freedom and the handling of radical ideas.

In June, university leaders warned that academic freedom was under pressure. ‘While academic freedom has created space for great thinkers, contrarian questioners, and dedicated researchers to push the boundaries of knowledge,’ they wrote, ‘that space is now narrowing.’

FvD founder Thierry Baudet criticized Dutch campuses for avoiding controversial debate. “Going to campuses to challenge students with an ideological opponent doesn’t happen in the Netherlands. Scholars and administrators fear things will get out of hand,” he said, noting his own experience being struck with an umbrella at a discussion in Ghent in 2023.

The Netherlands’ academic freedom index fell from 0.92 in 2018 to 0.76 in 2024. Only Portugal, the U.S., and Greece scored lower among Western countries, while several Global South nations, including Burkina Faso, scored higher.

Caretaker Defense Minister Ruben Brekelmans had to leave the University of Amsterdam under pressure from anti-Israel activists earlier this year, and events with NATO General Rob Bauer and Defense Minister Kajsa Ollongren were canceled or held without an audience.
