Dutch electricity production rises 7% in first half of 2025

The Netherlands produced nearly 64 billion kilowatt-hours of electricity in the first six months of 2025, a 7 percent increase compared with the same period last year, the Statistics Netherlands (CBS) reported on Thursday.

Production from fossil fuels, including coal and natural gas, increased, while electricity generation from wind declined due to lower wind speeds on land and at sea. Renewable sources—solar, wind, and biomass—accounted for 48 percent of total electricity production.

Solar power generation peaked in the second quarter, thanks to sunnier weather compared with 2024, CBS said. Overall electricity consumption remained roughly the same as a year earlier.

The surplus electricity was primarily exported to Belgium and Germany. Exports in the first quarter of 2025 reached record levels, the CBS noted.
