Heavy turbulence on Delta flight to Amsterdam; 25 hurt

A Delta Airlines flight to Amsterdam had to make an emergency landing after 25 passengers were injured during heavy turbulence. The plane was on the way to the Dutch Capital from Salt Lake City, but had to land in Minneapolis so that the injured could be transported to the hospital, BBC reported.

The plane hit heavy turbulence about two hours after takeoff. Medical personnel awaited the plane in Minneapolis and assessed the condition of the passengers and crew after the emergency landing. 25 people were taken to a nearby hospital.

The severity of their injuries is unknown. It is also unclear whether any Dutch people are among them.

Delta told the BBC that it was supporting customers and staff with their “immediate needs.”

According to the BBC, 207 people have been seriously hurt by turbulence in the United States since 2009. Worldwide, there are about 5,000 incidents with heavy turbulence - turbulence strong enough to lift you from your seat if you’re not wearing a seatbelt - per year.
