Smoke in cockpit forces emergency landing of London-bound jet at Schiphol
Updated at 16:10 to add information about the plane from Almaty.
A Wizz Air flight en route from Poznań, Poland, to London was forced to make an emergency landing at Schiphol Airport on Sunday after smoke was briefly detected in the cockpit, marking the second emergency landing at the airport this weekend; NOS reported.
The aircraft, an Airbus A321, issued a mayday call shortly before 11 a.m. after the crew noticed temporary smoke in the cockpit, according to the regional safety authority. Emergency services, including firefighters and ambulance personnel, were deployed and on standby as the plane landed safely.
Paramedics examined the pilots after landing, but they were found to be unharmed. The cause of the smoke remains unknown.
Approximately 300 passengers were on board at the time. All were rebooked onto other flights to London departing from Schiphol.
On Saturday, a cargo aircraft also made an emergency landing at Schiphol. A Boeing 747 operated by Atlas Air, arriving from Almaty, Kazakhstan, experienced an in-flight engine failure. One of its four engines stopped functioning. No injuries were reported in that incident either.
