Dutch gov't announces AI factory in Groningen; €130 mil. investment
The government and the Groningen region are jointly investing 130 million euros in an AI factory, where companies and knowledge institutions can experiment with artificial intelligence. They’ve also asked Brussels for a contribution, which should bring the total investment to 200 million euros.
A private AI factory is “not a luxury, but an absolute necessity,” caretaker Minister Vincent Karremans (Economic Affairs, VVD) reported this to parliament. “AI will fundamentally change our economy and society. But anyone who does not develop the technology themselves is dependent on others. That is why we are fully committed to a strong Dutch AI infrastructure.”
The government is contributing 70 million euros, mainly from the budgets of Economic Affairs and Defense. Other Ministries are also contributing. The government has been considering the arrival of an AI facility and the necessary supercomputer for some time, but until now, it was unclear who would pay for it.
Defense sees opportunities to use AI to map risks faster and more accurately, for example, in the field of cybersecurity. The government also sees applications in healthcare, in the management of bridges, dikes, and energy networks, and in the more efficient organization of government services.
“AI is already changing warfare forever,” said caretaker State Secretary Gijs Tuinman (Defense, BBB). “AI affects our entire way of working, from planning maintenance on everything that drives, flies, or sails, to collecting, processing, and analysing intelligence and making operational decisions.”
The regional contribution of 60 million euros comes from a fund for economic recovery in Groningen. This money became available in response to the parliamentary inquiry into the consequences of gas extraction in the province. The region was also chosen because it already hosts innovative companies and knowledge institutions. The availability of energy also played a role.
