Dutch tenant group warns of illegal rent hikes amid policy confusion
The Dutch tenant organization De Woonbond has issued a warning to renters about unlawful rent increases being proposed by some landlords. The group has allegedly received multiple reports of suspicious rent hike proposals in recent weeks.
At De Woonbond’s legal advice service, the Huurderslijn, tenants contacted the organization after receiving rent increase proposals as high as 7.7 percent. Many of these tenants live in the social housing sector, where a lower percentage is legally allowed.
The situation has reportedly become increasingly unclear this year, following the Dutch government's initial promise of a rent freeze. "Because Wilders pulled the plug on the cabinet before the bill could be processed, tenants are now facing rent increases of up to 5 percent instead," the spokesperson added.
A spokesperson for De Woonbond said, "In the best case, landlords are unaware of the rules, but it is more likely these landlords are exploiting confusion in the regulations. That is why it pays for tenants to carefully check any rent increase proposals."
