Landlord arrested for fraud over excessive service costs, energy fees
Thge police arrested a 54-year-old man in Vught for of defrauding his tenants in Den Bosch and other places. The landlord allegedly earned 800,000 euros in ten years by charging his tenants too much service fees and energy costs, Omroep Brabant reports.
The man owns a large number of properties and mainly rents them out per room. According to the police, the man, with the help of his accountant, charged tenants high advances for service fees and electricity costs. At the end of the year, he paid little to no of the unused money back to the tenants. If tenants objected, he sent them a falsified statement from the accountant.
This has been going on for ten years. The case came to light in 2022, when tenants approached the energy company themselves with questions. The energy company then discovered that the tenants’ invoices were faked.
The police raided the man’s home after his arrest and seized several cars and bank accounts. During the search, investigators discovered that the man had been tampering with meter readings.
The accountant is also a suspect in the case. The police have already questioned him.
