FC Twente Women win second straight Dutch national title with 3-2 comeback over AZ

FC Twente secured its second consecutive Dutch women’s national title on Saturday with a 3-2 comeback win over AZ, overcoming a two-goal deficit in front of a home crowd at De Grolsch Veste. The result gave Twente the title on goal difference, as rival PSV also won 3-2 against Feyenoord.

Twente and PSV entered the final round of the Eredivisie season tied on points. But Twente held a superior goal difference—+49 compared to PSV’s +44—and needed a win to stay ahead. Forward Jaimy Ravensbergen played a decisive role, scoring all three goals for Twente and netting the winner in the 83rd minute from the penalty spot. Her hat trick brought her season total to 23 goals, making her the league’s top scorer.

Twente’s title hopes appeared in serious jeopardy early in the match. The team, coached by Joran Pot, fell behind 0-2 within the first nine minutes. AZ’s Karlijn Woons opened the scoring by heading in a corner, and Desiree van Lunteren added a second with a shot into the near post.

Ravensbergen missed a major chance early on but pulled one back just before halftime, turning and firing in Twente’s first goal. She hit the crossbar in the second half, but leveled the match just after the hour mark with a fortunate strike. Twente was awarded a penalty in the closing minutes after a handball, and Ravensbergen calmly converted for the 3-2 win.

Meanwhile, PSV was briefly in control of the title race. Shanique Dessing gave the Eindhoven side an early lead against Feyenoord in the 10th minute. Mao Itamura equalized, but Dessing scored again before halftime, marking her first goals of the season.

In the second half, PSV defender Emma Frijns—filling in for injured captain Gwyneth Hendriks—accidentally scored an own goal to bring Feyenoord level at 2-2. Fenna Kalma restored PSV’s lead with a header in the 87th minute, but with Twente also winning, the title stayed in Enschede.

The result capped a historic season for FC Twente, who also defeated PSV in last week’s KNVB Cup final and won the Supercup earlier in the season. The club is the first in Dutch women’s football history to win all three major domestic trophies in one season.
