Feyenoord legend Joop van Daele passes away at 77 years of age
Former footballer Joop van Daele has passed away at 77 years of age, his former club Feyenoord reported on X. The Rotterdammer played for Feyenoord from 1967 up to 1977 and scored the winning goal for the club in the Club World Cup of 1970.
Van Daele came off the bench to score the only goal in the home game of the final of the Club World Cup between Feyenoord and Argentinian side Estudiantes. The first leg in Argentina had finished 2-2, meaning that Van Daele’s goal ensured that Feyenoord became the first Dutch team to win the trophy.
Players of the Argentinian team pulled Van Daele’s glasses off his head after the goal before Carlos Pachamé broke them. “The glasses of Van Daele” are still showcased in the Feyenoord museum.
Van Daele was loaned to Go Ahead Eagles and also played for Fortuna Sittard and Excelsior after leaving the club. He was also an assistant manager for Sittard and Excelsior, while also becoming the manager of Excelsior.
Feyenoord announced that it was with great sadness that it learned of the death of the former player and former youth scout and gave its condolences to the family and loved ones of Van Daele.
The club has submitted a request to the KNVB to play with black armbands in Van Daele’s memory in the game against PSV on Sunday in the Eredivisie.
