Lidl recalls Kania cheese sauce over food poisoning risk

Lidl has issued an urgent recall of its Kania-brand cheese sauce sold in the Netherlands due to the possible presence of the harmful bacterium Bacillus cereus, which can cause food poisoning. Both the supermarket chain and the Dutch Food and Consumer Product Safety Authority (NVWA) warned consumers not to eat the product.

The recall concerns only Kania cheese sauce products with a “best before” date of January 27, 2027. The affected product carries the barcode 20774240.

In a warning published on May 2, Lidl stated, “Customers are urgently requested not to consume this product.” The company emphasized that the recall applies only to the specific batch of Kania cheese sauce sold in Dutch Lidl stores with the above-listed date and barcode.

Bacillus cereus is a foodborne bacterium that can lead to symptoms of food poisoning. The NVWA confirmed that consuming contaminated products may pose a health risk. Both Lidl and the NVWA stressed the seriousness of the potential contamination.

Customers who have purchased the cheese sauce are advised to return it to any Lidl store in the Netherlands. They will receive a full refund, even without a receipt. Lidl has directed consumers seeking more information to its website.
