Young children spend nearly 1.5 hours per day on screens
Children up to and including the age of 6 spend an average of about an hour and a half per day on digital media, the Media Literacy Network reported based on research. They mainly watch videos.
The Media Literary Network organizes the Media Ukkie Dagen every year to draw attention to media used by the youngest children and the risks associated with it. The Network also monitors the media use of this group every year. In February, a research agency surveyed a panel of over 1,000 parents with children aged 0 to 6 years old.
According to the Network, the survey showed that this age group uses digital media for an average of 86 minutes per day. This is longer than the current recommendations, but slightly less than a year earlier. In previous years, the number of screen time minutes increased.
According to the Network, this could be because parents intervene more often and, as a result of the attention to the subject, deal more consciously with digital screens for their children. But the decrease could also be due to better weather during the research period, for example.
Children most often watch videos on television, followed by tablets and mobile phones. In addition to watching videos, they also play games or listen to something via digital media. According to the study, one in three children has their own device.
Young children spend the most time on activities in the offline world, such as playing and reading.
