Cabinet wants to scrap autism tests for driving licenses; other medicals may also change
The Cabinet wants an end to autistic people having to take a medical test before they can get their drivers license. Minister of Infrastructure Barry Madlener also wants the Central Office for Motor Vehicle Driver Testing (CBR) to adapt their rules for people with ADHD, because he thinks it is unclear how these rules improve traffic safety.
In addition, people who have had psychosis should no longer have to wait six months before they can apply for a test. Madlener writes this in a letter to the Tweede Kamer, the lower house of the Dutch parliament.
The medical tests have been a nuisance for people with a handicap and politicians for a longer time. It has not been proven that people with autism cause more accidents. They are often forced to wait long periods of time before a medical test, and many see it as an unnecessary obstacle. The CBR is now going to look into ways to scrap the medical.
People with ADD and ADHD are proven to have a higher chance of being involved in an accident, especially in the first two years that they have a driver's license.
But almost everybody makes it through the tests, which are quite time consuming. Madlener does not see the point of them currently, and wants the CBR to look into altering the medical tests.
The CBR is also going to look into earlier medical tests for people who have experienced psychosis.
