Amsterdam stabbing victims include Americans, Belgian, Polish, and Dutch victims
Police have released the nationality and ages of the victims of the stabbing in Amsterdam city center on Thursday. The victims include two American nationals, one woman from Belgium, a Polish citizen, and one Dutch woman. Police suspect that the victims were chosen at random.
The incidents occurred in and around the Sint Nicolaasstraat at around 3:15 p.m. The two American victims were identified as a 67-year-old woman and a 69-year-old man.
A teenage woman from Amsterdam, 19, was also among those hurt. Additionally, a 73-year-old Belgian woman and a 26-year-old man from Poland were also stabbed.
All five victims were critically injured, with two being severely hurt in the incident, it was previously reported. There are currently no updates on their condition.
The suspect was also taken to hospital after he suffered a leg injury when a bystander tackled him to the ground before sitting on him until police officers came to make the arrest on the Gravenstraat. This came after security footage had seen the suspect running away from a group of bystanders. His motive remains unclear.
“The police investigation is continuing and is currently the highest priority. We hope to gain clarity soon about the background of this horrific stabbing incident. Our hearts go out to the victims, their families, and loved ones,” Amsterdam Mayor Femke Halsema said in a statement on behalf of the Amsterdam Police and the Amsterdam Public Prosecution Office.
