The U.S. continues run as the biggest international investor in the Netherlands

The United States was once again the biggest investor in the Netherlands last year, numbers from the Dutch central bank, De Nederlandsche Bank (DNB) stated. The U.S. has topped this list for years, according to the bank. However, the figures have increased meaning due to the threat of a trade war with the U.S.

The United States of America had invested 1,822 billion euros in the Netherlands by the end of 2024. Most of this was investments by American multinationals in their Dutch subsidiaries. Part of the money invested in the Netherlands also flowed back to business units in other countries.

Conversely, the Netherlands invested 1,496 billion euros in the U.S. which brought the so-called net external assets to minus 326 billion euros.

According to DNB, this means that Dutch business and the capital market are relatively strongly intertwined with those in the U.S. Other countries that are high on the list are Luxembourg, with many international investment funds, and Germany.

Tensions are currently high between the U.S. and the European Union. The nation’s president, Donald Trump, has threatened import tariffs on European products. The EU has, in turn, set its sights on U.S tech companies and their power in the market.
