Dutch Minister calls out TV personality over downplaying Russian threat
Minister of Justice and Security David van Weel has expressed his willingness to meet with Dutch television personality René van der Gijp to explain the severity of the Russian threat to Europe. Van Weel made this statement on the TV program Café Kockelmann in response to Van der Gijp’s recent remarks on Vandaag Inside, where the commentator dismissed concerns about a potential third world war as exaggerated fearmongering.
Van Weel strongly disagrees with Van der Gijp’s stance. Alongside Minister of Defense Ruben Brekelmans, Van Weel has been actively encouraging Dutch citizens to take precautionary measures in case of emergencies. The minister emphasized that this is not about inciting panic but rather about preparing for real threats that already exist. “The Russians are already carrying out attacks on European soil,” he stated, citing incidents such as disruptions to underwater cables and numerous cyberattacks.
A major concern for European security, according to Van Weel, is the possibility of Russia escalating military aggression in Eastern Europe. If Russian forces were to invade the Baltic states, strategic European supply lines could become primary targets. He specifically mentioned Rotterdam’s port as a critical logistics hub for military equipment destined for the front lines, which could make it a potential Russian target.
Vandaag Inside attracts millions of viewers daily, giving its hosts significant influence over public opinion. Given the platform’s reach, Van Weel extended an open invitation to Van der Gijp, stating at the end of Café Kockelmann that the commentator is “more than welcome” to discuss the matter further.
